We have a strong connection to the transgender, non-binary and intersexed community and we are here to help you with your journey of transformation.
A very warm welcome to all our transgender, intersexed, non-binary and gender fluid patients, past, present and future. We are an NHS approved Clinic and take referral’s for Laser and Electrolysis hair removal from the NHS. We also accept private paying clients.
Laser Hair removal is a cornerstone of gender-affirming care, often used to alleviate gender dysphoria by permanently reducing unwanted facial and body hair. For many transgender women, it is a vital step toward achieving a more feminine appearance and eliminating the “five o’clock shadow” that testosterone-driven facial hair can create.
For private paying patients, we offer a free consultation and patch test service. You can book an appointment by calling or sending a WhatsApp message to 07484692680 or if you prefer you can book online using the link below.
• Gender Affirmation: Reducing visible hair like beard shadow can significantly help with "passing" and reducing dysphoria.
• Surgical Preparation: Many surgeons require "clearing" of hair from donor sites before gender-affirming surgeries (like vaginoplasty or phalloplasty) to prevent internal hair growth and complications.
• Skin Health: Eliminates the side effects of frequent shaving, such as razor burn, ingrown hairs, and scarring.
• Timeline: Most people require 6–12 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. Results often start appearing after the third session.
• Effectiveness: Laser works best on dark hair and light skin because the laser targets melanin (pigment).
• Light Hair: It is generally not effective on blonde, grey, white, or red hair. However these hairs can be successfully removed using Electrolysis, which is also available as an alternative treatment at our Clinic.
• Skin Tone: We use the Cynosure Elite Plus system which are safe and effective for ALL skin types.
• Sensation: Often described as a "rubber band snap" against the skin. Our laser uses cooling technology to reduce discomfort.
• Compatibility: Laser Hair Removal (LHR) can be done at any stage of transition—before, during, or after starting HRT.
• Synergy: For transfeminine individuals, HRT (oestrogen and T-blockers) can slow new hair growth and make existing body hair finer, making Laser Hair Removal more effective. However, HRT usually does not eliminate established facial hair on its own.
If you are self-funding, we offer a free consultation and patch test service. Prices start from £30 per session for Laser or Electrolysis depending on which area you wish to have treated. We can offer tailormade packages to suit your needs and also offer “buy 6 sessions upfront and get 10% off”.
The Laser Me Clinic is an approved NHS provider of Laser Hair removal and Electrolysis treatments for Transgender patients. We primarily focus on facial hair and surgical site preparation.
NHS funding for Facial Hair Removal
Currently in England, once you have been referred, you will be entitled to 8 sessions of laser OR 16 hours of electrolysis (or a combination of both). Referred by your GIC to the Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Service (GDNRSS).
Top-ups: The NHS does not fund maintenance sessions once your initial package is finished. Any further sessions must be self-funded and if required we can offer our services.
If you are undergoing gender-affirming genital surgery (like vaginoplasty or phalloplasty), the NHS may fund hair removal on the donor site if the surgeon deems it "medically necessary" to prevent post-op complications like internal hair growth.
• Referral: This is usually handled by your surgical team rather than your GIC.
• Methods: Laser is preferred for pigmented hair; electrolysis is used for light hair or if laser is ineffective.
For surgical site preparation (donor site epilation), the NHS typically funds as many sessions as required to achieve clinical clearance. Unlike facial hair removal, which has a standard cap, surgical site removal is considered a medical necessity to prevent post-operative complications.
Specific Donor Sites
The amount of work depends on the type of surgery and your specific anatomy:
• Vaginoplasty: Usually targets a specific area of the scrotum or penile base.
• Phalloplasty (RFF): Focuses on the "urethral strip" on the forearm—typically a 2-inch by 7-inch segment.
• Phalloplasty (ALT): Focuses on the donor site on the thigh
To access NHS funding for transgender hair removal, the process depends on whether you need it for your face or for a surgical donor site. In all cases, you must first have a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria from an NHS Gender Identity Clinic (GIC).
1. Funding for Facial Hair Removal
This is typically accessible once you are an active patient on an NHS gender care pathway.
• The Referral: Your GIC clinician will submit a referral to the Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Service (GDNRSS), which manages these requests for NHS England.
• The Package: In England, you are usually entitled to 8 sessions of laser or 16 hours of electrolysis(or a combination).
2. Funding for Surgical Site Preparation
This is handled differently as it is considered a medical necessity for surgery.
• The Referral: This request comes from your surgical team after your initial consultation, rather than the GIC.
• Criteria: The surgeon must confirm that hair removal is required to prevent complications like internal hair growth or infections.
• Unlimited Sessions: Unlike the facial package, there is typically no fixed cap; funding is approved for as many sessions as needed to reach the surgeon's required level of "clearance".
3. If You Are Not on an NHS Pathway
If you are currently on a long waiting list or using private care but want NHS funding, your options are more limited:
• Individual Funding Request (IFR): Your GP can apply to your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) for an IFR.
• Success Rate: These are rarely granted for hair removal unless you can prove "clinical exceptionality"—meaning your situation is significantly different or more severe than others with the same condition.
Important Note: The NHS generally will not fund hair removal if you are having your actual gender surgery privately.
• The information is for educational purposes only.
• Patients must confirm eligibility with their specific Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) or GP.
• Funding is subject to local Integrated Care Board (ICB) or NHS Board approval.
• NHS England: Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Service (GDNRSS)
• TransActual UK (excellent for up-to-date policy breakdowns)
• GIRES (Gender Identity Research & Education Society)
